Matīss Čudars is one of the most versatile and actively performing Latvian guitarists and composers. His music is infused with Latvian melodicism, a love for the immensely rich rhythmic worlds of African and Indian music, and his work in classical music brings a sense of structure to the trio’s sound that often extends beyond the traditional boundaries of jazz.
Joining Matīss in the group are one of Latvia’s most sought-after bassists, Edvīns Ozols, and internationally award-winning drummer Ivars Arutjunjans.
Each member of the Matīss Čudars Trio has worked across a wide range of musical styles—from pop and rock to underground metal and avant-garde improvisation. Edvīns Ozols performs with the Latvian Radio Big Band, appears in jazz projects with Intars Busulis and Raimonds Pauls, and collaborates with Latvian jazz musicians Kārlis Auziņš, Toms Rudzinskis, and Kārlis Vanags.
Ivars Arutjunjans is an active participant in the European jazz and improvised music scene. He has performed in more than 30 countries and received several major awards, including the Grand Music Award (2022) and the title “Best Jazz Album in Latvia” (2019).
The music of the Matīss Čudars Trio is primarily rooted in organic jazz and blues. In 2025, at the world’s largest jazz conference Jazzahead! in Bremen, Germany, Latvian musicians performed there for the first time in history — the Matīss Čudars Trio. The ensemble’s melodies offer listeners aesthetic enjoyment and emotional comfort, leading them on a walk, sometimes a light run, and occasionally presenting a subtle musical riddle that is not so easy to solve.
