Inspired by Rothko’s artistic philosophy and his desire to elevate painting to the level of music and poetry’s poignancy, saxophonist Matthias Van den Brande has created a sonic world in which every note becomes a brushstroke of color on the canvas of imagination.

“Fields of Color” transcends the boundaries of perception, allowing audiences to experience Rothko’s works through the lens of contemporary jazz.

Matthias Van den Brande is a versatile saxophonist and composer who studied in Belgium, Amsterdam, and the United States; he has performed with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra and released several albums.

Joining Matthias this evening will be Jean-Paul Estiévenart – one of Belgium’s most sought-after trumpeters, whose expressive and virtuosic playing style brings distinctive драматurgy to the project.

On double bass will be Tijs Klaassen, an Amsterdam-based bassist whose playing seamlessly blends tradition with a contemporary sound.

On drums – the talented percussionist Wouter Kühne, one of the most active young-generation jazz musicians in the Netherlands.

The musicians have performed in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Spain, appearing at prestigious venues such as Bimhuis, Bozar, and the North Sea Jazz Festival. This time, they will give concerts in Riga, at the renowned Mark Rothko Art Centre, and in Liepāja at the cultural venue Pegaza Pagalms.

After the concert, a jam session and conversations will follow, creating a lively, spontaneous, and unrepeatable continuation of the evening.
